Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) engaged Genesis to integrate critical supply data with electronic patient records in its single largest digital transformation. With 10 hospitals in the Greater Manchester area, MFT is the largest trust in the UK.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust knew it required a way to connect patient information across its network of hospitals while providing greater visibility to patients and staff alike. Prior to launching the Hive initiative, employees were often tasked with tedious manual data entry, and patients who received care across different Trust sites were left to repeat the same information to multiple staff members.

MFT knew that an electronic patient record format would deliver consistent and reliable access to critical patient information across all of its sites, while enhancing patient safety and providing patients greater control over their care.

Access to timely and accurate item utilisation data was a critical piece of the puzzle. As a result, the Trust set its sights on a massive digital transformation effort that would deliver lasting advantages for patients and staff alike.

The Trust engaged Epic in a £181 million contract for the Hive Project, a significant digital transformation effort that would provide one central point of access for patient records across the entire Trust. The 15-year contract covered nine hospitals across six cities, and nine dedicated Scan4Safety team members led the way.

Because it had already implemented Genesis solutions across the Trust for materials management, and because of its seamless integration capabilities with Epic, Genesis was the natural choice to bring integrated, accurate supply data
into patient records.

  • Enhance consistency and quality across locations
  • Streamline access to critical supply data
  • Automate processes, minimise manual error

50,000 errors corrected
280 new smart devices deployed
61,000 items
20,000 traceable implants
422 procedural rooms
All managed in Genesis

“Genesis provides MFT trust not just with great visibility over its inventory management… but really useful Point of Care data capture and robust traceability. This level of data allows us to look at standardisation and rationalisation opportunities throughout the many thousands of procedures we perform.”
